Google not recommending siren maps anymore?

Thu Jun 13, 2024 10:47 pm

(guess I could've posted this on the siren maps page)

Recently, while searching up state siren maps, I've noticed that Google isn't recommending the maps as one of the first options anymore, like it did not too long ago. It isn't with state maps, either. It seems that every map doesn't show up anymore. The only way you can have a chance is if the state map has a siren board thread attached to it, or if someone posts about it somewhere else. I fortunately do have lots of the maps I use saved on Google Earth, so that does show that they are all still up. Bookmarks even work, so I'm not sure why they stopped showing maps as one of the first results.

You can try it for yourself by searching "the Thunderbolt siren map" on Google, and the "Thunderbolts in Existence 'spinoff' maps" Siren Board page should show up, and the real Thunderbolt siren map isn't even there!

Is this only affecting me, or is everyone having this issue?

Since I have all of the siren maps I need bookmarked, I didn’t notice this. But it affects me too. It might be a problem with Google My Maps since thats where public maps are created.

You're not alone. I just did a search for "siren map" (in quotes) and noticed this problem as well. ARS comes up as the first result, yet none of the public user-created maps directly appear. The majority of the other results are from government/municipal websites. Google's algorithm honestly doesn't make any sense.

I noticed this awhile back too. I tried to search for the Texas siren map and it's not there anymore.

Is there something we can do about this? We might have to have another list of popular maps on the Siren Board again to make sure that the maps are actually accessible to people who haven't saved them or bookmarked them.

I'm probably guessing that Google isn't thinking that the maps are "official" anymore and decides to not show them, even if you put "siren map" at the end of your search!

I too am having the same issue with Google searches not showing maps. There is a workaround and it is to use another search engine besides Google.
