Is it legal to operate a siren in an emergency?

I’m wondering if it is legal to operate a siren as an external alert on a weather radio. For example, if my radio got a tornado warning, is it legal to activate a siren?

If it's something small like a little indoor MS siren, go right ahead! If it's something bigger, check your local ordinances or contact your local government.

It should be as long as it’s quiet enough. It also would be a good idea to set it off on your county/city’s siren testing day, as you don’t want to freak your neighbors out (if you have any close enough). I set my Sireane jr. off every time the sirens are tested for my area, and I live in a large urban neighborhood! I guess it can also depend if your neighbors mind the noise.

It also depends on your jurisdiction. Its not up to you to decide when there's an emergency (even when you think there is) and that could be an issue.

I would strongly recommend against it, unless you have specific permission from your local government to do so. I could easily see being slapped with a charge for "inducing panic" or similar.

I second this. Before doing ANYTHING, check with the local government FIRST.
