Siren hunting in Washington.

Sat Nov 09, 2024 7:08 pm

I hope to keep this post fairly short and straight to the point. I live in Western WA, in a town with no sirens. I’ve only heard an outdoor warning siren once (or twice, if you count the vehicle siren, the Q, on my dad’s firetruck), and I had to travel to Kansas for it. I’ve wanted to be able to siren hunt more for a while, but WA isn’t the best for enthusiasts. For inactive sirens, you got the CD yellow Chrysler Victory Bell at Phinney Ridge, but my focus is on active sirens. Most of the siren here are Modulators, which I’ve been slowly getting a huge distaste for. Most sirens don’t usually have info on a testing date (if they even test at all). So, if anyone has any suggestions on what active sirens I could hunt down, feel free to say. I’m mainly looking for electro-mechanical, but I guess I can live with electronic ones too haha.
Quite a talkative friendly fellow most of the time. Will definitely yap about sirens all day, every day.

Check the Siren Maps for a map in your area. Or, do it the old fashioned way, by looking at Google Maps/Google Earth at likely positions. Or, do it the really old fashioned way and hop in the car.

It's not all bad. I live north of you, and I take advantage of my dad being willing to drive me around. (I'm not old enough to drive myself.) I also recorded a modulator in Edmonds (WA) go off during this year's Shakeout by having him drive me. unfortunately there are about zero active electro-mechanical sirens around me, however there are quite a few inactive ones.

This is really the way, if you're still pretty young. The summer when I was 15/16, my family did a lot of driving around for fun, and thankfully they were happy to cooperate with me in looking for sirens. That's how most of the locations in the southeastern corner of Idaho were discovered and photographed.

Reminds me, I really need to get back to some of those sirens, now that I have a much better camera. Most of the photos on my Flickr account are from 2011.

Hope to try that out. I get my permit around next year- a step closer to a license. Unfortunately, my parents aren't as willing. However, I may be able to hit an STH-10 at the other side of the state.
