Possible former mystery siren

Wed Dec 11, 2024 11:56 pm

So, last week, I was told by one of the teachers at my school that at one point there was a siren mounted in this area. Likely mounted by the building here

Was this building a fire station at one point?

the internet also does wonders. Before going to the library try checking out websites like Vintage Aerials in that area. you may spot a siren.
Sirens may not be sexy, but they sure work.

The address is 6717 S Quay RD, Suffolk VA

Edit, I might try to get out there at some point in the future to see if I can get answers, though it probably won't be any time soon.

From what I was able to gather, the town of Holland was incorporated into the city of Suffolk in 1974; given the architecural design of the building (and signs of age) it would appear this building was constructed in the 1930s or 1940s as their fire department. When Suffolk absorbed it in 1974, it was closed as fire protection was provided by the city, probably out of a nearby station.
If I were to guess, it was probably a Sterling or Federal Model 2/5.

Though that is likely, they did build the current fire station which is south of there between 1968 and 1982. The address he mentioned however is the address of this newer station. This makes sense because it would have been the 70s at the time and he's in his 50s now, so probably something like an FS product of some sort as there are 2 FS model 5s, 2 Model 2s, a Sentry 5v, and another Model 2 removed in 2021. At this point, it could be anything. There isn't a street view of the road that goes right by the station, so I might try go there in person and ask about it. it could even still be there, but since it's not on the VA siren map, I have no clue.
