Hawaii Thunderbolt 1000T part two.

Tue Dec 04, 2007 11:43 am

The Thunderbolt 1000T with the level 7 chopper voltage setting @ Maunalua bay sounded successfully again on the first working day of the month. This time, recorded with better quality, and closer zooming.

I'll post high-resolution pics in this same thread if a demand for them exists.

I've been talking with someone over at Civil Defense, and I'm hoping to get a full location sheet on each siren here on Oahu. I'll be taking photos of more sirens around the island, and recording others that I don't know where they are located.

This has to be a 240v siren on a 480v feed...they don't go that high normally.

Good idea recording the sirens each month, it wont be long until they are all replaced in Hawaii.

We had a strong wind warning two days ago, and it pushed the horn 180 degrees. The wind is pretty strong in that area, so this siren always ends up pointing towards the mountains.

Here's the pictures. Very high resolution pics (3648x2736, 10mp).

I've also noticed that on the panel it has the older "F" thunderbolt logo. I tried to get a shot of the rotator box because it has the newer "FS" logo, but the sun made it hard to do that.

As for replacing this siren, I think it will be a while. If anything, this siren will be replaced with a Federal Signal DSA or Modulator, and Civil Defense will probably move this one to a dead spot in need of siren coverage. If they're just going to trash it, I'd love to get my hands on this one.

This is an appropriate post, because today is Pearl Harbor Day. What kind of sirens do they have around Pearl Harbor?

Yes, it was the 66th anniversary of Pearl Harbor here. All flags were at half-staff today.

From what I've heard, the big push to use more outdoor warning sirens here in Hawaii was after WWII, when the April 1st 1946 tsunami hit in Hilo.

The Pearl Harbor area (including near Honolulu International Airport, Nimitz area) has a good mix of electromechanical Federal Signal Sirens (1000Ts, STL-10s, SD-10s, STH-10s, 2t22s). On the outskirts of Pearl Harbor Area I think I've also seen a couple Modulators. If I manage to get a coverage map or specific siren location sheet from the communications director at C.D., you can expect a thread dedicated to some more quality siren pics/videos from Oahu.

Sounds like it's hopped up on cocaine! I've never heard a TBolt that high, and the blower sounds weird too. Are you sure this was the way it sounded live? I'm surprised the motors didn't burn out!
