City with the scariest sounding Thunderbolts?

Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:53 am

What city do you all think has the scariest sounding thunderbolts? I think the 1000T's in Louisville, Kentucky sound absolutely scary. There are at least 2 video on the internet that feature Louisville's 1000T's. These sirens sure sound grumpy and scary!
Federal Signal Thunderbolt Series, still the King of Air Raid Sirens!

In terms of port ratio or ambience throughout the buildings etc?

Any siren can sound scary. Just depends on who the person is and what the sounding is for.

A sounding for a nuclear attack is likely to scare the living crap out of anyone...

Wouldn't the truly scariest sounding Thunderbolt be one that doesn't sound at all during a warning? Sometimes, silence is scarier than noise.

Probably the one in Crossville,TN which is a 1003.
When I heard it going off I was in my mom's car outside of a BBQ joint when it went off about 300 ft away during a tornado which turned out to become an F5  . Although we got lucky because we were in Cookeville when it hit the F5 status.

There was one thunderbolt that was on top of the County building in Alexandria, Mn that was very scary to listen to, however that siren has been replaced by a Federal 2001 (around 1997-98).
Bring back the thunderbolt, NOW.

I am going to vote for the siren in Palmyra, Pa, it is a 1003 that is set up for 4 rpm rotation speed but has the solenoids set on either the slowest setting or the second slowest setting... up close it isn't anything to crow about... but from 2 miles away... WOW.. what a sound!!!

From my personal experiences, I would have to say the Thunderbolts that used to reside in Austin, Minnesota, simply because I was in 3rd grade at the time I lived there, and one night I had just gone to bed, it was pitch black outside, and all of a sudden I heard 3 or 4 Thunderbolts go off for a Tornado Warning, and there was just something about the Thunderbolts there that sounded spooky, I believe they were lower pitched (Rotor speed seemed slower than most Thunderbolts I hear).
