Numerous videos from around Columbus, OH, Whelens and TBolt

Sat Jun 28, 2008 5:29 pm

For those of you who didn't know, this past Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, Columbus, and Dublin, Ohio had a tornado warning. I've never seen this many videos from one area! Sorry if I posted a link to a video more than once. I can hear a duel tone Thunderbolt with a broken rotator in the first video, which is weird, because I thought that Columbus's system was all Whelens.

Here are my videos I took that night.

My brother did most of the filming so don't blame me for the crappiness.

Regarding the Thunderbolt in that video, there are still 11 (I think) scattered around the county. They're slowly being replaced by Whelen 4004s though.

Does the first video in the first post have a Sentry sounding somewhere in there?

No Sentries around here whatsoever. The closest place that I can think of that has any Sentries is Germantown near Dayton which has two Sentry 10V2Ts. There are also a couple on some wierd campus type place near Wooster and there's a 5V in Warsaw. None of those places are within an hour drive from Columbus though.

A lot of Whelens sound at 465 HZ, which happens to be the same pitch as quite a fiew Sentries. It can be hard to tell them apart from a distance in some recordings. Sentries have more high harmonics than Whelens though.

Here's yet another video from Columbus. In this one, you can hear at least two 4004's, two 3016's, and another siren.

The others were replaced this year. One of the most recent replaced was the Briggs & Demorest Thunderbolt.

Are you one of their "Siren Buddies"?
I wish our EM was like this one, having this volunteer program and maps of the system and...information! Our county website just says "Sirens are intended to alert those outdoors of an emergency situation such as a Severe Weather event or National Emergency."
