Well, yesterday the fire department had a training exercise in my neighborhood, and I complimented someone who seemed pretty important on the town siren system, and he said "We can talk on them too.". Now, since we're talking Whelens here, I knew it was possible to use voice on them but had never heard them in anything but wail. Well, apparently, they test voice once a year when the town has a disaster drill. If I can just find out when that is, maybe I can catch the test.
I left this board in early 2010. I am not a part of the siren community in any sense anymore. I will not provide assistance or information.

Road trip!

Today I went to Saratoga Springs, NY to see Skidmore College. Here is some of what I saw.

STH-10 in Albany:

Pleasant Valley, CT has a Model 5 hidden in the red cupola on top of their station:

A mystery siren in Colebrook, CT. Is that some kind of Model 2 variant or is it...an ACA Screamer?! More importantly, can anyone actually tell from this picture?

Last of all, Riverton, CT. Couldn't actually get a siren pic...all the angles and timing were bad. They have both a Model 5 and a small red siren that is either a custom-housing Model 2 or a Darley, I presume, both on the same roof. Here's the station from the front:

Looks to be a Sterling 2V8. They're around the same size as a Model 2 though.

I have found another Hartford Thunderbolt!

It is mounted on top of a fire station that's located at the corner of Sigourney Street and Niles Street, which is conveniently located just off of good old Asylum Avenue. Presumably, if one visited the station and asked to see the siren, they would allow you up on the roof to take some real close up pics (there seems to be easy and secure roof access!) This maybe my first up-close Thunderbolt ever!

More updates coming soon!

hey CTsirenhunter. i was just at a t-bolt 1000 in meriden, CT on gypsy street by the Sacred Heart cemetery yesterday. they are huge in person aren't they? i'd say see if you can get a look at if yourself if you ever head down that way. i got there from shelton, CT by taking exit 66 off of 15. t-bolts are sure a sight to say the least. i've heard from 3t22 that new haven and the surrounding area is full of deactivated 1000s and 1000Ts. i'm sensing a road trip one of these weeks. :D

here's a few shots of the meriden, CT t-bolt i saw.

i have no idea how long the model 2 has been there but i've been told by 3t22 that the t-bolt has been there since the 1950s.

I've seen and heard that 2016 many times as I grew up not too far down Rt 66 in Portland. It's been in service for at least 25 years. It sounds wail for fire calls, and one blast at noon. This was formerlly both the town's fire siren and a CT Yankee plant siren. When the plant closed in 98 the FD kept the siren, and picked up a few additional 2016 heads for parts.

To kb1hwh: Thanks for the pictures, because I don't see myself winding up in Marlborough any time soon.

To iamdave: Nice work on capturing one of the Meriden Tbolts that I would probably never see in person. Very comprehensive photos. Good to know that we've got yet another CT siren hunter out there.

And now, CTsirenhunter Road Trips presents...

Something unexpected on Long Island!

So I took the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry to LI to pick up my girlfriend in Patchogue, which is near the south shore. About halfway down LI, just past the town of Coram, I see a large pole with a box near the bottom. For some reason, I figure it can't be a siren. But right after I pass it, I turn around and sure enough, it's actually...

Something from the Penetrator line!

I got a picture on the way back up to Port Jefferson in the afternoon. Then I saw another one by the Coram fire department (too far for a picture) along with a white STH-10.

Not quite sure why there are Penetrators here, especially because they seem kind of strange choices for fire sirens. Where's the nearest nuclear plant?

That would be Shoreham, decommissioned years ago - actually it never went online. A network of ACA sirens was installed all over the north shore in anticipation of Shoreham opening, but it never did. Some of the sirens were taken down, others were abandoned, others were offered to nearby fire departments. Some of the local vols took a few. The one you saw is no doubt one of these. That might be the one on Route 112 (Port Jefferson-Patchogue Road) you saw. [/i]

That was indeed the road I was on. I wonder where the others are besides the two I saw...

Not sure if this site has been mentioned here before, but I stumbled across it the other day... Loads of info on all the fire sirens scattered across Long Island.
