SD-10 help

Hello,

I am trying to take apart my SD-10s chopper from the stator to get the motor tested but this weird thing is locking it in there. How do I get it out or how do I get the chopper out? PS sorry the photo is so big. Image

You need a Harmonic balancer puller to take that off.

The little locking thing you are referring to is the shaft key. It makes sure the torque from the motor actually gets transferred to the rotor. It is not doing anything to lock the rotor to the shaft. During the pulling/removal process with the puller it will just fall out.

sometimes, with a small enough screwdriver, its possible to carefully work it upwards and out from the Keyway. When you rebuild the assembly, get a new one, and that'll be the best thing to do.
Still close enough to a Fed Sig 550AT to drive out on test day: First Friday in May - 7PM!

Remove the shaft key first. Put it in a safe place until you can locate a new one to replace it with. Then pull the chopper assembly.

How do I take out the shaft key? with plyers? and woble it back and forth?

No, do not worry about trying to remove the shaft key at all. During the rotor pulling process, it will come loose on its own. Worst case scenario is it stays put in the shaft keyway and then needs to be wiggled out with a pair of pliers once the rotor is off.

The plate and lock-bolt setup that SD-10s came with was just to prevent the rotor from slowly slipping down the shaft over time. Over time, corrosion and dissimilar metal interactions make the shaft and rotor stick together even more. You will need to get a puller (looks sort of like a dinosaur foot) to pull the rotor off the shaft. It may take anywhere from a hundred or two to several thousand pounds of force to pull the rotor off.

If you can get by with leaving the rotor on, you are better off doing that. If it does need to be removed to do work of some sort, make sure the bolts going into the rotor holes are deeply seated and are grade 8...you don't want any bolt heads snapping off.
