They use Alert for Tornado Warnings, Attack for Floods and HiLo for Terriorism.
The tornado siren emits a steady 3 minute tone. The flood signal is a quick high-low siren sound (like a British siren). The Man-Made Disaster sounds a tone that alternates between
Hamilton County,OH uses Alert for Weather Warnings.
According to Douglas County, KS EM officals "Wheter an Alert or Attack signal is activated, take shelter" so I assume under extreme conditions, they might sound the attack signal.

Years ago they did, but it changed at some point (not sure why or when).

The current rule is that the siren will be sounded for Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued during a Tornado Watch or for a Tornado Warning.

Several counties here in southeastern Michigan used to run their sirens in "attack" mode for Tornado Warnings. This practice pretty much stopped in the late 1970s, with several communities in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties being the last to do so. IMHO, I really preferred the attack signal over the 3-5 minute steady "alert" signal, as it really got your attention, especially when you were indoors.

Our low tone Model 7 sounds attack (5 cycles) for daytime fire calls, and continuous alert if a funnel cloud or tornado is spotted.

City of Cincinnati,Ohio (Hamilton County) only uses attack during test on 1st wednesday of the month. Test order 11.58am to 12:00pm individual 3 sec Growl test 12:00pm Alert test 12:02pm Attack test. All weather situations use allert mode. Chemical spills also use allert mode. There was a large chemical spill about 12 years ago (sulphuric acid)at the Hilton Davis plant. The siren system sounded in alert mode. I believe the surrounding counties of Butler,Warren,Clinton,Clermont,Preble and Montgomery(City of Dayton,Ohio) use the same method.

Williamson County, TN uses the Attack signal for warnings and tests. I have a video on YouTube with a video of a 2001 going off for a test.

Cullman County, AL has a system of whelen wps models and they use the actual attack signal for warnings...not wail mode.
