slow Thorguard at work

Sat Sep 26, 2009 11:22 pm

The Thorguard at the county club I work at was slow to sound for lightning today. We heard thunder for several minutes before it sounded and it sounded two blasts for the warning it normally sounds one. Later on as the weather started clearing it sounded three blasts. Could there be problem with it given how long it took to sound a warning?

Maybe the electrostatic fields were just messing with it that day, or it was probably calibrated to sound at a certain electrical potential. The thing is, I don't think a ThorGuard can be activated by any electromagnetic fields, because that's what a detector does; TG predicts the risk of an impending strike, instead.

I believe the three blasts I heard was the all clear because the sky was clearing. Why it sounded twice for a warning is odd because it's usually pretty reliable most golf club and courses swear by Thorguard.

Three blasts for an all-clear? I'd be more used to a single, longer blast. I guess that it was most likely programmed to sound every so often as a reminder. :?:

I heard today that one of the maintenance guys nearly got hit by lightning Thursday. he said it was drizzling and he was showing some techs where the water lines were when bam a bolt hit a tree a foot beside him and split it. The siren sounded a minute after that. They better call whoever maintains that thing and get it fixed. One of the cooks said the sirens had been sounding late for awhile.
