Thunderbolt 1003 at NY LaGuardia Airport!

Sun Dec 27, 2009 7:19 am

I don't remember any discussion of a Tbolt at the airport, but here it is, completely visible in this picture.

I got this picture from an airliners.net trip report. Here's the link

Anyone know the history of this bad boy?

Nice catch! Not sure I would've seen a siren at the airport.

There are 2 1003s at that airport. There is one on another building also.
Looks to me like they have been there a long time. At least since the 60s.
Here are some pics that a guy with the airport sent me 4 years ago.
He mentioned one on a terminal building. I guess that's the one on that
site that you posted the link to. Here's the other one. Don't know what
building this one is on.
I've never been able to figure out the RCM. Looks pretty weird to me.
No chopper transformer.

Cool pictures! I wonder if those used to go off for an aircraft emergency. I'd love to hear those two going off simultaneously! I sure wouldn't want to be standing on that terminal building when the Tbolt went off...then again, why would I be on it

What would a 1003 sound like at street level or on an upper floor of a nearby building if it was mounted on the very top (what was designed as an airship mooring mast) of the Empire State Building?

I've heard a 1003 that was on the top of like a 10 or 15 story building. Echoed a lot because of the river valley, and I can hear it from my house on the other side of the river due to its height. Other than that, it sounded the same.

Those CD decals on the cabinets are on the small side.
And it looks like the solenoid flasher relay is in the RCM.
Too bad that guy didn't send a pic inside of the other cabinet

Are they still used?

Seems to me it would be a good idea to have warning sirens at an airport for emergencies...
