Macomb County, recently spent over $30 million to erect a fully digital 800 MHz radio system.

Very good move. Not only is the digital system scrambled, it's also quite illegal to possess 800MHz equipment without a license, including radio scanning equipment.

Thats only for certain 800MHz frequencies (such as cell phone bands) Dual trunking and digital scanners are perfectly legal (though in some states it's illegal to posses them in your car).

Wow. You guys have a lot of knowledge. I wish I had the time... Yeah, it also helps that I live right across the street from Fraser P.D. and they have a big ole antenna facing the road. I should have no proble hearing them. With the info given about the new Macomb frequency, would I need a different model other than the one mentioned?

That's it? A measily hundo?? Wow. I thought they were way more expensive. So, I could keep the handheld in my car and still hear the activation as long as it has the features mentioned. See, I was thinking of a DIN sized UHF CB. Those are like 3-400 bucks. A lot for me. But the handheld sounds good, especially if I have to park away from the siren when I want to be right up next to it. Here's another question....I saw a nice desktop scanner on a website. The siren close to me is within a mile, though I haven't found it quite yet. Would I be able to hear it's activation tones from my computer desk?

I have one, but it is a generic radioshack branded scanner, I am not sure of the model number though I would have to look that up.

You would need the one I recommended: Uniden model BCD-396T (If you want a base/tabletop unit, then you would need the BCD-996T). Not only can you listen to the local fire/siren frequency, but you can also listen to all the police and fire activity across the county as well. Macomb County decided to join the MPSCS digital statewide system two years ago. They started the migration from their old system, to the new one two months ago.

OK I found the model number. It's a Radioshack PRO 95 1000 Channel Dual Trunking scanner. (long name, but that's what it really is called)

I have a PRO-95 scanner. Very good scanner. I still have one in my truck, clipped to the sun visor. It picked up fire pages several times my Motorola Minitor did not activate. I only use it for analog scanning (VHF/UHF), I have no idea how good the digital trunking features though as nothing around me I care to scan has gone to digital 800MHz.

I just bought a Pro-82 after pricing a few dual trunking scanners. But sense only a handfull of agencies around here have trunked frequencies (Hartford PD being one), And most of the FDs haven't upgraded yet, I'm quite happy with it. And yes I have heard a few sirens, and Diaphones get toned out on it.
