Actually it probably doesn't reduce the sound any at all. It disperses the sound on a vertical plane instead of a horizontal plane. Meaning that anybody on the street nearby will get blasted.

I wonder why they have 3 sirens instead of just one...is the Whelen a backup for the Mobil Directo, and the Modulator for weather? None of that would make sense in the first place, though...

It's a Mobil Directo. Anyways, the top horn was turned verticle because of noise compaints.

It was more likely turned vertical to direct the sound wave up over the hills.

I believe that the Modulators are used for tsunami warnings, the Allertor was used for in-town fire calls, and the Whelen was used for fire district calls. As of July, 2013, both older sirens are no longer active. Here is the site in that photo as it looks now. The sirens are just out of the photo at center-left.

I don't know. Over in Skagway, the fire department has an Allertor and FOUR diaphones on the hose tower.

I am standing across the street from these sirens at the moment. Currently the Mobil Directo and the electronic one are no longer in use. Only the Modulators are used for tsunami warnings. If you're a collector, give the Seward VFD a call.
