Even if there's an old fire siren laying around it can be very difficult to cough up the funds for returning it to operation. I was talking with someone at the Gloucester County VFRS not too long ago, and when I asked him if they had considered putting their old Model 5 back into service he said that they had decided they couldn't justify reconnecting it to power, restoring it, etc.
Admittedly, I'm not very proficient on the cost of purchasing new and restoring old sirens, but I would imagine the price tags would be somewhat similar. You'd have to ask an expert about that though.

There would be no "money problem" If the politicians were allowed to run voice ads on the Mods. We probably could have voice capable Modulators on every street corner in America before the next election cycle.

I sometimes wonder if a lot of complaints (warranted) and issues that arise with the sirens would wane or cease all together if the Emergency Manager position was a position that is voted on by the people of the county, parish etc.....if things are not being done right, vote the bum out of office.

Northern VA and much of Florida seem to be of the same mindset: Opposition to any outdoor siren.
In Florida, the argument seems to go that nobody would know what the siren means or what to do. There was some talk after the 1998 tornadoes about siren systems but only two cities around Orlando installed any sirens.

Northern VA doesn't get too many tornadoes so they don't need sirens.
