I believe there is one on a fire station in or near Farmingdale, New York that is a B series 1003.

Neat find!

The question arises... where are the solenoid collector rings in a B-series 1003? The place where they are in an A-series 1003 is occupied by the chopper motor collector rings in any B-series. They probably didn't stack two sets of rings on top of each other, the rotator box is the same size as any other B-series (unlike the A-series 1003, whose rotator box was taller). This really makes it puzzling.

How can you tell the A, B, and C series apart?

The B series is pretty easy as they have an offset rotator. Not sure about how to tell the A and C series apart, but if you know when they were installed then that helps a lot.
Although, if the siren has "jailbars" in the horn (like the one in my avatar), then it's A-series without a doubt.

Whoa! Where'd you find that?

Listening to the sound of the blower, and sometimes the siren itself helps. Also, little things such as the aforementioned offset look on the B series and Jailbars in the horn can usually denote the series.

The C series thunderbolt also has a small blower case. It is also hinged I think...

So does the B series. The vertically mounted blower was introduced with the B series and carried over to the C series.

Here is a video of the East Farmingdale B series Thunderbolt 1003 sounding for a call, I know this has been shared before but some of our newer members might not have heard/seen it. If you ever wondered what a Thunderbolt 1003 sounds like doing hi-lo on Chopper Level 1, here you go.. you can also hear the blower at the beginning of the video. Ken (Truckie6119) has a number of videos featuring this thing from a distance and it is just as creepy if not more so from a distance!
