I didn't think these ran long enough to need cooling.

That fan is there for a reason. These motors only have a five minute duty cycle and without the fan it gets too hot to hold with your bare hands in less than 30 seconds.

Older Model As had no fan, but their motors were built with a very different style. Heavy cast housing integrated with the siren end, much higher quality electrical design, ball bearings, etc.
