Thank you, 1st 2t22 I must give you an applaud.
They ARE ugly.
Why not have the air intake opposite the "horn"? (behind)
I would think there would be some sound wave cancellation between to two.
Also, I bet a lot of sound waves get cancelled gathering them in that
collector around the stator leading to the horn.

Robert, actually the projector (horn) is the top part. The bottom part is the intake for the rotor/stator assemly. I believe ACA's thinking was that it would concentrate the sound better and project it out higher.

It wasn't ACA's thinking it was Biersach Niedermeyer.
The original name for that siren was the Mobil Directo.
This ad was in the Sept. 1953 issue of Fire Engineering.
Notice in the ad the little arrows coming out of the top horn.

Thank you, but I don't believe Allertors are ugly at all. Their design makes them the most recognizable siren out there. Whenever a family member sees me point out an Allertor, they can then spot other Allertors before I can.
Allertors also have a great sound. Not my #1 favorite, but it's probably in my top 5.
The Allertor right next to my house is not pretty.
probably becuase its an ugly gray color and it loos like
crap next to all the houses.
Another reason why I wouldn't be a fan of it is that it's single tone. I like the normal dual toned Allertors better.

I agree. it sounds terrible. Whenever people come to my house, ther
point to it and say "What the heck is that???!!" i say its a tornado siren
and they say "Wow, thats weird-looking..."
