The Siren Board

Very cool to see St. Louis' STL-10's mentioned in the SD-10 add, since I live in the St. Louis metro area! Those STL-10's were just replaced about 6 or 7 years ago by Whelen WPS-2800 series sirens, some being 2806's, 07's, 08's and 09's. St. Louis had 128 STL-10's, purchased in 1954, but most were non-functioning due to age and unavailability of parts by the time the Whelens were installed. Great sirens while they lasted!

Most SD-10's I've seen have the band over the ports. And the sirens we had around here were painted dark green. San Francisco painted their old sirens black.

I've read somewhere that the band gives the sound a conical effect; it pushes the sound against the two cones, in a similar way that sound is pushed onto the sides of a horn.

How much would they charge for one?

Was that automobile ad filmed in the Bay Area?
But I thought I recognized downtown L.A. near new Disney Center,
(they have the neatest pipe organ with pipes looking somewhat like pick-up sticks!) but could easily be wrong.

Funny - was so pleased to see the black SD-10 that I don't remember
the car maker!

Hey, from looking at the SD-10, is it merely the bottom half
of a 2t22?
I'd remove that band blocking the stator to see if the siren would be louder at a distance.

No. While it may use that same air intake tube, it has a completely different rotor/stator assembly. It does, however, share the same noise making parts of some FS 500T's.

It's basically a 5T, with a different motor assembly that is.

This might be the 3rd and Bixel siren while it was still up. My memory is foggy about that corner, but it looks right. I was born a couple blocks from that corner

Guess the siren in the auto ad is in SFC because alL.A. SD-10s are in CD yellow paint.

Anyone knowho in L.A. I may contact about getting one for a trailer park tornado warning?

Here's another site with a set of photos of LA sirens... This list shows many of the newer (1960s) neighborhoods too. Most of these photos appear to have been shot in the 1980s, based on the background scenery. So it's a nice retro look since all those Beverly Hills T-bolts are gone now. It would be nice to find one still up, but the 4 or 5 locations I checked turned up a blank space. The Allertors are still in Culver City, though!
