Now, whether Daniel was intentionally joking on the pole mount thing or not - I do believe he is correct. There were no pole mounted sirens in London as far as I know - or Portsmouth for that matter.
In some places, single pole siren mounting is illegal for whatever reason.
But it could also well be that servicing would be made easier.

all klaxon CS-8s that I know of in the UK are platform/surface mounted.

Broadmoor ones are, Carstairs ones aren't.
