Jeb, would it be possible to swap the stator/rotor combo onto a sd10 type motor? or are the stator mounting locations different? just curious......

I was thinking the exact same thing. I've always wanted to hear a 10/12 SD-10.


Honestly, I'm damn near obsessed with combined-rotor 10/12 port sirens, especially rare or uncommon ones like the Allertor, Mobil Directo, and the 10/12 Banshee from Iowa I hopefully still have a picture of somewhere.

But you have to wonder what sort of wild prototype stuff was made over the years. I've always had a hunch that Federal at least experimented with their larger, increased efficiency 10/12 rotor from the 500T in other sirens like the Thunderbeam. I know its too large to drop directly in to a SD-10 housing, so I doubt that took place.

Ian and Travis were down yesterday and helped me get the Allertor back onto a cart and the Mobil Directo onto a pallet. I've almost got the MD torn completely down for pressure washing and repainting.

So would this Mobil Directo would have been made in 1962 judging by the last two digits on the serial number that was shown above?

Do you know what type of CD logo is on the horn? I would like to see a clear image of one because Toronto had one or two with that same logo.

Not the best picture in the world (taken with my cell phone), but that's the most legible "ghost" decal on its upper projector.

Thanks for the photo, pretty cool logo. Is Jeb going to be making some of these for the siren after its restored? If so I wouldn't mind a couple.

Well the motor turned out to be full of wet mud, so I washed it out the best I could and I'm now putting low voltage DC current through the windings to dry them out. As saturated as the insulation was in this motor it could take up to a week to get it back to up to a passing megohm reading.
