There's a 1003 at Tooele Fire Station Number 1. I sure wish it still worked. But it is very close to the Tooele City Hall. So I'm guessing it could have been put out of commision due to construction of the City Hall.

how many counties still use thunderbolts?

Sat Jul 19, 2008 1:44 am

Cobb County, GA has about 20 Tbolts still in use.

When I lived there(1971-89) there were only 2 in the county seat of Marietta.

Back in the early 90s Cobb bought the Tbolts which DeKalb County, GA had taken down. Many of these were installed at fire stations.

Unfortunately about 10 of the Tbolts have bitten the dust and been replaced by Whelen Vortex or WPS sirens.

The city of Smyrna(where I lived) has its own siren system(mostly STH-10s), which includes 2 Tbolts. I believe they may have also gotten those from DeKalb.

Hey all! After months of lurking, I finally had to register and jump in on this one. There are a lot of Thunderbolts left here in LaSalle county (IL), mostly for the Exelon LaSalle County Nuclear station. They started out with a system of 36 Thunderbolt 1000s in the late 70s, a few of them have been replaced but most (over 30) are still up and active. They've added another 12-15 sirens through the years for more coverage and they are very diverse. I know of 2 STL-10s, a model 2, a round back 2001, 3 P-50s, and several T-128s and new T-135s, there's even a Whelen. There are T-bolts and other sirens all over the countryside around Marseilles and Seneca, mostly south. They are all tested at 10am every 1st Tue. Ottawa has a very old 1000 on the roof of a high rise building downtown that is tested (along with a 2t22 and 5 2001s) at 10:30 on the first Tue. It doesn't rotate and always points to the north east. There's a T-bolt in Peru at the south end of the Peru Mall on Rt. 251, I'm pretty sure it's still active. There is also a T-bolt at the Orica Nitrogen factory South of Seneca, It's been closed for over a year and they are slowly tearing it down , so I don't know what the fate of that siren will be.

Here in Greenwood S.C. we still have about 20 T-bolts active and 10-15 in storage for parts.

Louisville and Jefferson County, KY still has about 40 active Thunderbolts left. Most of them are 1000T's, but there's at least one 1003. We used to have a fiew 1000's, but I don't know if any of them are still in service. We also still have quite a fiew 2T22's and 3T22's. Our older sirens are very slowly being replaced with 2001's and Modulators. I've just heard recently from a guy who lives near Louisville, that the Watson Lane Elementary School Thunderbolt was recently replaced. I'll have to go down there and verify that.

A city official told me that the Memorial Auditorium Thunderbolt downtown was recently replaced with a 2001. That may have been the very high pitched 1000 that could be heard downtown in the old days. That 1000 reached a pitch of near 1050 HZ! Also, an A series Thunderbolt from Louisville was donated to a nearby Kentucky county. It may be one of the old 1000's, maybe even the one that used to be downtown.

It seems that the oldest siren instalations are being replaced, while there are no plans to replace recently restored sirens like the one at Doss Highschool. I was also told that our city is still restoring older sirens, and one of the newest instalations is actually a restored Triad, which I'm thinking is an xT22.

Paducah, KY and Lone Oak in McCracken County still have eight of their nine original Thunderbolts. Of six notable locations, one is atop the 10 story "castle tower" of the Tudor styled Irvin Cobb Hotel, now the Irvin Cobb Apartments.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paducah,_Kentucky If you look hard you can see it in the back of the building near a chimney at the upper left of the picture.

Another is atop the 8 story Lourdes Hospital near I-24. Still another is in Oak Grove Cemetery near the main entrance. Two are at firehouses and one is at an elementary school.

One of the original nine has since been replaced by a 2001.
The most overlooked opportunities are in the learning of and improvement in old technologies.

San Luis Obispo County used to have a system of thunderbolts, of course they've replaced them with 2001's, but I do wonder if they left one or two in place just for old times' sake. I'm going there soon and I'll def. go siren hunting to find out.
