it started in 1940 the FEDELCODE # 2, 3, 5 and 7 1/2 verticle sirens or TYPE/ MACH as what was on the spec plate. I have a MACH 3, 3 HP. it's like from 1941... There was never a "model" 3 or 7 siren made. When Federal started using "Model" as a description only the model 2 and 5 were available and in the late 60's and you could get a Model 5 with either a 5 or 7 1/2 HP motor.. It was still called a Model 5 even with a 7.5 HP rating...

In addition to my above post.. here is a Model 5 with a 7 1/2 HP motor to back up my statement.

That's the 12-port version, 690 hertz, just like the WWII-vintage one we have here in Mount Hope. Our siren is located on the side of the local water tower and sounds every day (except Sunday when they shut off the power) at noon.

OK, Now why do they shut off the power?
This has gotta be good.

Is yours also a fire siren?

Thanks,

They have to shut off the power to the siren because the timer would sound the siren if they didn't do so. As for your question about it being a fire siren, it WAS a fire siren until the early 1970s when they installed a Thunderbolt at the fire station. That has since been replaced with a 2001.

Couldn't they just set the timer to exclude the Sunday noon whistle?

But that might entail getting a new electronic timer, and they are expensive and no fun.

I love the old mechanical stuff and absolutely hate to see it replaced with electronic quartz stuff.

Interesting from that to Thunderbolt to a 2001.
At least they are staying with real sirens!

Never thought of a 2001 as a fire siren.

When will they go to pagers or Minitors, or do they already have them?

Thanks,

Yes.

That was MY remedy to innocent victims of my playing the Christmas bells in Denver's City Hall clocktower.

I'm all for that Noon siren sounding if it is a tradition.
If you move within earshot and don't like it, it's your fault.

But with the ever-increasing medical calls, especially the idiots calling
for non life-threatening medical problems, I oppose the siren being sounded.
