Putting such a siren in a covered "shed" was not an uncommon practice. The main hamper was maintenance access.

The dual head Federal Type B ranged from 3 to 5 horsepower depending on the generation. Its design was changed at least four times over the years. Some of these were sold by Mars, which lead to the misconception they actually made the entire siren. Federal had many distributors who sold Type B sirens including Mars and W. S. Darley. They were very popular sirens in ages past - the drawback is several were disbanded as the years went by.

Attached is a picture of one Type B with directional covers. The idea was to create a bi-directional siren with better sound coverage than the typical dual-head siren. All of the Type Bs are antiques as they were not made during or after World War 2.

Speaking of antiques, what's this thing? I found it at the Cecil Township, PA FD, and supposedly they got it from the Sturgeon VFD, where it had been used back to the department's founding circa 1946 (and was already present then). https://goo.gl/maps/Z1ghc6GWeK82

Definitely a FS&S Type B. The way the motor cover is shaped is a dead giveaway.

Darley is essentially Federal, so it could be a Federal Model 7.
Actually Darley built many of their own sirens at times and bought components from Federal at other times.

Are you referring to the thing next to the chimney? Possibly a Model 1?
