There were weather radios in and probably before the 70's, and alerts could be received through an EAS bulletin on TV.

Another, less "practical" means of warning would consist of some emergency personnel (fire, police, EMS) driving around town with lights and sirens blaring while yelling at people to get indoors.

For all the photos of Darien's black Hurricane, I wonder if it might be a multi-signal siren. The multi signal Hurricanes with solenoid-operated guillotine valves usually went to oil refineries, chemical plants, and fire stations that used sirens. Its valves were similar to a Thunderbolt 1003's except they were located inside the horn shroud, mounted along the stator spacers that join the chopper assembly to the horn shroud. The five signals used by the multi-signal Hurricane were Steady, Wail, Hi-Lo, Pulse, and (if memory serves) Yelp. Notice Hi-Lo and Pulse were both 'steady' - ACA never did the wailing variations like Federal did.

Oh ok. Didn't know that. I bet sirens were still very expensive for towns and cities to purchase at that time. Right? Than after couple of years latter sirens finally got cheaper enough for towns and cities to purchase.

Wow. Didn't know that a ACA Hurricane-130 siren can have a high-low signal also like a Thunderbolt 1003A siren. But it was a option right?

ACA only made the multi-signal Hurricane if you requested it. Otherwise you got a standard two-signal siren.

I know that since most ACA sirens weren't coded, I'm guessing their main control box didn't have a HI-LO setting. Did they have to ship a different control box for the coded Hurricanes? Also, what makes you think it is a multi-signal siren? Is there anything different about these pictures from other Hurricanes?

ACA's normal control boxes would not have had the additional parts needed for the auxiliary signals. The standard two signals were Steady and Wail.

As noted in my first post, the multi signal Hurricanes with solenoid-operated guillotine valves usually went to oil refineries, chemical plants, and fire stations that used sirens. If the fire station did not use sirens for calls, then it is probably a two signal siren for the city instead.

Enter the news and the weather radio. Also, In my town, there are probably more than enough sirens to hear indoors.
Yeah... Sorry. Haha. Anyways thank god for the modern age. Back in the early 70s I don't know how did people got information about any tornados or any natural disasters. Because technology wasn't that advance as it is today and they didn't have proper weather type of radar until the early to mid 80s to the early 90s.
Back then, there weren't many sirens with that high of a pitch.

I mean the early warning technology wasn't there yet in the early to mid 70s. I mean it still took the national weather service seven to ten minutes to conform that time that there was a tornado on the ground and the tornado was already close to the town or city they were warning.

Oh ok. Wow really didn't know that. I wish there was a audio recording of a ACA Hurricane siren doing Hi-Lo signal.
