My uncle doesn't live too far from that siren, so I'll ask him if he can get some good pictures. I hope they haven't swapped it out with another Thunderbolt since those pictures were posted on the Siren Archive. Louisville EMA is known for doing that.

BTW, I have some good news. According to Jim, who is in charge of the sirens here in Louisville, the Thunderbolts and Triads (2t22's) aren't being replaced with new sirens any time soon, because our city government currently doesn't have the funding to buy that many new sirens. He said that that would be a multi-million dollar project, and the city just can't aford to spend that kind of money right now. :) I think they're concentrating on putting new sirens up in dead zones right now. However, I think the Alertronics were replaced because they were no longer compatible with our newer Federal Signal system.

If it was up to me, I would have put T-128's up instead of 2001's, and I would have put Whelens up instead of Modulators. Other cities have diverse systems with several different brands, so I don't see why the EMA here couldn't have tried to make that work. The only two Whelens we have that I know of, are privately owned, so the EMA doesn't have to worry about them.

Ok, my uncle just sent me four more pictures from his general area, and here they are.

2001 at Greathouse Elementary School on Browns Lane

2001 at Saint Matthews Avenue

Thunderbolt 1000T at Wesport Middle School

Thunderbolt at Zachary Taylor Elementary School

I believe that the one at Wesport Middle School is the high pitched one that can be heard in my Kentucky Statewide Tornado Drill recording. It is the second Thunderbolt to start. The two 2001's can both be heard in the wind-down in that same recording. The Zachary Taylor Elementary School Thunderbolt picture was taken for Holler, who requested it. That Thunderbolt is within hearing range of my uncle's house, but I think it was completely drowned out by the Bowen Elementary School Thunderbolt 1000T.

My uncle and I took four more pictures earlier this week, of sirens in my area, and here they are.

Thunderbolt 1000T at Wilkerson Elementary School

Thunderbolt 1000T at Stuart Middle School

High pitched 4/5 port Thunderbolt 1000T at Conway Middle School

2001 at Eisenhower Elementary School

All four of these sirens are within three miles of my apartment. The one at Wilkerson Elementary School is a lot closer than I thought it was, so I was probably mistaking it for the Thunderbolt at Conway Middle School. After looking over the map, I think that the high pitched 4/5 port 1000T may be the one at Conway Middle School, but I seriously doubt that it's the same one that was there when I was a kid. It has a much slower wind-down, and it's set to a much higher pitch. The 2001 at Eisenhower Elementary School surprised me, because it was listed on the map as a Thunderbolt, and it looks like that siren has been up for a while. After finding out exactly where that siren is, I think it has probably been a 2001 all along, because I don't remember a siren being at that location back in 1990, when my grandmother recorded the sirens from a nearby school. The Thunderbolt at Stuart Middle School is probably the one that's currently having chopper motor problems. I'll have to get a recording of it though, just to be sure.

Today, I finally talked to someone at Electrical Maintanence for the city of Louisville, who knew what I was talking about! His name is Jim Byers, and he also gave me some really good information.

Sadly, the Kerick Elementary School Thunderbolt 1000T had to get a replacement head recently, so it probably sounds different than it used to now. There are plans to relocate both the Louisville Water Company Thunderbolt 1003, which is perhaps the only 1003 in our city, and the Pope Street Thunderbolt 1000T. One of those sirens may be replaced with either a 2001, or a Modulator. However, they haven't decided what they're going to do yet. Also, two new sirens were put up recently, one off of Preston Highway, and one off of Dixie Highway. I'm not sure what model one of them is, but the other one is a refurbished Triad. . The duel tone Modulator at the Waterfront building had some problems, so they had to reload the tones into it, so that's probably why it's single tone now.

I told him about the countdown timers on our Thunderbolts being set too short, and I explained to him how they couldn't wail properly the way they were set, so the countdown timers may be returned to their original eight to ten second settings. I mensioned this board to him, and he may register here. He acted like the city may be interested in Thunderbolt and Triad parts and even whole sirens, which sometimes appear for sale here.

Wow, I wish we had someone like that in our maintenance department! All the ones that work in ours seem to know absolutely nothing about anything siren-related what-so-ever! Thank God they at least know what one is, since the base has so many of them. If only a lot of our cities' maintenance crews had at least one crew member that was like that, quite a good number of the older sirens all over the US would possibly be in better shape than they are now.

This guy has only been working with our sirens for a couple of years. He already knows a lot about them, and he seems eager to learn more.

If they do get rid of that 1003 or the Pope Street 1000T, I've already let them know that I would be interested in acquiring one of them. The only problem is, they're both three phase units, so I would have no way to power them. If I get one of them, I would like to try to get it installed in Pine Knob, Kentucky, in Grayson County, or I may have to trade it for a single phase unit, since I don't think there's any three phase power in Pine Knob.

I've also heard that the Rohm and Haas chemical plant in Rubbertown may be closing down, and if they do, I may try to get my hands on one of those Whelens.

If that doesn't work, I'll have to reupload it. Since I'm visually impaired, there's absolutely no way for me to tell whether it worked or not, unless someone tells me.
