Not sure why some are so low around there. Most are mounted on standard wood utility poles, and some on normal height metal towers. I'd imagine those low-mounted ones are unbearably loud to any bystanders within a couple hundred feet or so upon activation!

Most all of the sirens in Jackson County are mounted low. There's a couple right off hand, down the road from my girlfriend's house, that are mounted on regular utility poles, but I know of another one in downtown Jefferson right behind the fire department that's basically eye level with a lot of houses. You go downhill into the town of Jefferson, on all sides, as it's in somewhat of a valley, and the siren, a finback Vortex, is mounted pretty low when you look around at it's surroundings. It's eye/window level with a lot of houses.

Somewhat OT also...but Ian, when did Jackson County add more sirens? I'm trying to compile a list of them but can never get anyone on the phone at the EMA office nor fire department. The most I know is that they test the first Wed. of the month at 11 AM, given there are no other delays. If for some reason the test has to be cancelled or postponed, they WILL NOT test another day until the next month, strictly to avoid confusion.

Would be interested to see where the rest of the sirens are...Hornets in Jackson County. There's another siren out there that I remember seeing out towards a pond in the middle of a field, literally in the middle of NO WHERE. It's towards the Nicholson area but can't for the life of me remember where it's at.

Oh yeah, that one in downtown Jefferson is really low-mounted. I just don't get why they wanted to mount them so low in densely populated places like that, I'd be afraid someone would threaten a lawsuit over hearing damage with it being such a loud siren so close to the ground. Another good one, and one of the first like those I saw, was the one over on Crooked Creek Road at the South Jackson FD. No idea really, but I started noticing them within the last couple of years at most. I know I've seen two in the south end of the county, but so far I've only been able to find one of them on the map. I know what you mean about trying to squeeze information out of municipalities around here, nobody wants to tell you anything about their sirens, like it's top-secret information or something. I'm currently trying to map them all out just to get a feel for where they're all at, would like to go take some pics of the low-mounted ones next time I'm in that area visiting relatives.
