We've gone through like 8 directors in 5 years. The issue is that they switched the maintenance contract to a local mom-and-pop electric shop. For years Braniff has maintained the system and they did a fantastic job. Now Koontz Wagner (the local company) apparently doesn't know that battery chargers are a thing and therefore just changes out the batteries expecting it to work. It does...for three months...

But I digress. Sirens are only as reliable as those in charge of them.

The question would be better posed as "Why do siren enthusiasts dislike 2001's?", which is an easy one.

They have no outstanding qualities. They seem to get higher pitched with every new iteration. 2001's don't have an attention catching dual-toned sound, nor a classic 8 or 10 port single tone sound. They're just your standard everyday uni-directional.

Are 2001's worthy of hate? Probably not, it's more of a grudge some of us have against them. For example, I grew up with a 1003 in my backyard, seeing it get taken down for a 2001 was somewhat heartbreaking.

The 508 is what the 2001 should have been. Not all that much cooler than the 2001, but the acoustics are a significant improvement.

I don't prefer them but the higher pitch of the siren doesn't carry. My grandparents former house had a 2001 I belive less than a mile away, and on test day, you could hear it but if there was heavy rain, or something very loud occuring the siren would become inaudible.

I personally like them, I like their look and their sound and they are pretty loud sirens that do have a unique sound, and my County has 31 of them. They are what got me into sirens. (I actually used to think they were giant loudspeakers before I read about them.) Something about them, wether it be how they look or sound has always caught my attention. Their sound for my seems to vary a good bit in how far it goes, but that is something that probabaly happens with a lot of sirens, though to me they seem to go a pretty good distance.

I used to think that about Thunderbolts whenever I saw them until I went to an elementary school with one on top.

When I was a kid (1st grade) the T-bolt went up an my school. At the time I had no idea what it was. I remember seeing the hole in the ground, the pole and the yellow box (blower but didn't know it at the time). A few weeks later the horn on top of the pole, still to young to have a clue. Then came the first duck and cover drill siren and all. The loudest thing I ever heard, vibrating the floor LOL. 6 years old and only took once to learn what an air raid siren was.

As for 2001's I've come to accept them. 2001's are a reliable siren and does the job.

I am just bored of them, there is just too many replacing all the cool and old sirens, but in all respect, they are more powerful Also , louder, and have more coverage. Also, I have no problem with Whelen, it is just another siren brand, that makes great sirens, and ATI is trash(sometimes I wonder if it is the same ATI that made GPU's before AMD bought it..). But back to :2001:, they are good, effective, cost friendly. There is just a lot of them, making us siren enthusiast bored :P
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.
