Why did some older Whelen Vortexes have weather vanes on the back?

It was supposedly there so that, in the case of a rotator malfunction, the siren head could be turned by the wind itself.

That's a pretty cool concept, lol. But in a bad storm aren't the winds just going to blow in one direction?

Actually, iirc the reason the fin-back was bad is that it caused tension on the motor, and it would cause the rotating mechanism's to break.

I always assumed the fin was there to place even wind loading on both sides of the siren so as to ease the twist acting on the rotator mechanism.
