I PM'd Adam on Saturday, and said I'd be willing to cover the hosting cost if that would help. I haven't heard back thus far, but I bet he's had typhoon of eMails and PMs.

I don't have the experience to set up a great forum like this, but I can pay the hosting. As I mentioned in my first post on this topic, I think the board is fine with the current web host, and should keep the same moderators.

Thank you to the ones who have sent donations in the past couple days!

I'm all for that, just please do not use the new phpbb theme, use the classic one. The new one is horrible if you ask me.
Sounds good to me too. This is exactly the solution I went with when I set up http://www.hornwhistleboard.com

I took the then-beta phpbb3 and added extra BBCode tags to allow direct embedding of Youtube movies, an MP3 player, and tags to generate eBay links from auction ids.

I just didn't have the time to retrofit the siren board with the same system, which is why I would like to see it taken over by someone with more "personal bandwidth".

I have not given up on the hobby, it's just that I have a lot of hobbies and a lot less time to pursue them since having kids. I've still got my favorite sirens... 2T, 2T22 and 1003.

1. Adam Smith- Sounds like you are stepping down. I thought this might happen since it seems your interest has changed to steam whistles and ship horns. Well if you leave thank you your board it has offered much knowledge and possibly the inspiration for me to operate the first privately owned siren in unincorporated Cook county.
2. Let's Form a actual club with a president, a vice president, teasurer and a secretary. Now also add an executive board of 12 members. All these people to be voted for by site members only. Now to be a executive board member you must pay $25.00. That will cover the operating cost of the board and give notariety to members (that are voted for by us the users)
3. Terms are once a year and anybody who wants to run for executive board can pay $25 each year to be put on the ballot. Officers are live out positions since they are the founders of this board. There are no fees for officers.
4. Any extra money can be used for contests (best vid or pic) and/or some sort of social or small convention to rent a hall once a year on a weekend we can all meet.
Well that's my idea Adam hope you like it? Everyone on this site talks about how to make this a better site or make it cheaper. I say lets make a club to make this site stronger. Adam email me and I'll shoot you my number and we'll talk. Take care.
This is a forum, not the Roman government.

I'd hate to see the board completely "change hands". We all know what happens to a good restaurant when it gets a new owner. I don't have any knowledge to be able to offer help on the hosting technicalities, but as I mentioned in the PM to Adam, I can help with the $. I would only ask that the same moderators, and same basic rules stay the same.

If it's a matter of subscribing to a new host, not in Adam's name & responsibility, I can do that too and assume the cost.

I can pitch in too and provide some assistance if needed. I'm very experienced in website design and dealing with forums. If I can be of assistance (financially and/or technically), feel free to send me a PM.

just as a side note, the issue of "micropayments" has long been a topic on the Internet. It would be pretty painless to pay 50? a month or something to defray the costs of the board, and maybe $2 or $5 to join. There just hasn't yet ben a way to collect and process payments that small. It would help to slow down bots joining as well.

Well, whatever new board is created, Adam, can you post a link here to it when it's up so we can all switch over before you deactivate this one? Sorry to stray, I was just curious, you can ignore and go back on topic if you want.

The links will just be forwarded to the new board, so you won't be able to tell a difference.

As far as micropayments go, anything requiring money to join (even a cent) is going to act as a major inhibitor, but it would be a good way to collect donations.

So the link to this URL:

http://airraidsirens.com/forums/

Will still work, it will be used on another site?
