Ninja Squirrel, there is a Federal WPS-4003 or a 4004 in front of a Belleville fire station that's on a side street just off of, I guess, Main Street. I saw that a few years ago. If I remember correctly it's near a funeral home, if that helps.

Zetronist, the T-Bolt you're referring to was actually in Richmond Heights and was replaced about 10-12 years ago by a Federal 4003. Now St. Louis County EMA has been replacing sirens over the last year or so with Whelen WPS-2909's. They got tired of replacing parts for rotational sirens. There is now a 2909 in front of Brentwood's fire station.

Also, Zetronist, thanks for the condolences for firefighter Hummert. It's been a rough week. I'm a firefighter-paramedic for the Shrewsbury Fire Department and was on the call last Monday morning when Ryan and the 2 cops got shot. Our pumper was dispatched because the cowardly nutball who did the shootings set his house on fire. We staged on Big Bend just north of Manchester and were out of harm's way. It was a shock when we learned on-scene that morning that a firefighter had been killed. The guy riding jump on our pumper went through the fire academy with Ryan, and had just graduated this past Spring. I saw Ryan the week before when our department had training with Maplewood for a defensive driving obstacle course.

We are very close with all those guys there on the Maplewood Fire Department and I feel so bad for them. Hopefully they will all heal soon, especially those that were on the scene. It was like a battle zone in Iraq for a while there. I can't even imagine what they were going through.

Again, thanks. Much appreciated.

Our condolences, too.

Did they capture the murderer or find his body?

They found the remains of his body in the fire-destroyed house the next day, along with the remains of 2 rifles and a shotgun. He committed suicide by sticking a shotgun in his mouth and pulling the trigger. Too bad. I guess the coward didn't want to stand trial. From what I was told, he used a Japanese WWII high powered rifle with 220 grain shells. The Maplewood firefighter that I talked to that was getting shot at said the gunshots sounded like a cannon going off.

Thanks, too, Robert, for the condolences. Much appreciated.

On another note, concerning the siren systems in the St. Louis area, a friend of mine talked to a technician that works on the sirens in St. Louis County and was told that there is no money presently for any new sirens, even though there are some WPS-3016's that have broken rotators and the parts are no longer available to repair them, and will not rotate at all no matter what, then there are some other 3016's that have broken rotators but will rotate if the wind is strong enough!

I know of that one. It's quite loud from my house, which is about half a mile away from it. Not too sure of how long it has been there, but I do remember it going off when the tornado touched down in Shiloh back in 2002.

Either a 4004 or Vortex...voice doesn't ever sound on it, it has one of those fins on the back, and it runs in Attack in the same way as this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f13djfJP2tg

There used to be a Thunderbolt at Redman and 367. We could hear it from our house and it was the last siren to wind down. Sadly it's been replaced by a Whelen. I remember in 1982 when the Trampe rd Whelen and the Spanish Lake Whelen were put up. The school went pass the Trampe siren while the pole was on the ground waiting to be installed I don't remember another siren being there. There was a Thunderbolt that got toppled by a tornado on St Charles Rock rd the Post had a photo of it.

My sympathy about FF Hummert. I've heard of a couple of incidents over the years here in San Jose that were close to that, like a guy pointing a rifle at the first in Engine. The cops came & the guy took off, & was later captured.

Another time, a guy with an axe kept the first in Engine crew at bay with an axe at a working house fire!

Just going to throw in a few more things in the St. Louis area.

At SIU-Edwardsville, there's a rotating Whelen mounted on the corner of one of the buildings. It looks like a 4000 series, due to the lack of fin, but I don't know if it has voice capability, as I never heard a test of it before.

I was on my way to visit my brother in St. Peters, MO, and noticed that there was construction going on around a Walgreens. Before it happened, there was a Thunderbolt sitting on top of a hill behind it. After the construction started, I noticed that the T-Bolt was gone. A few trips later, I noticed a 2001, near the old T-Bolt location, hidden in trees. It has a solar panel...not sure if it's new, but I never noticed it before.

The EOWS 408 in Swansea is no longer there. Instead, a mile or so up the road, sits a Whelen 4000 series, I believe. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.5 ... 3,,0,-9.19

Belleville has a bunch of Whelen Vortexes / 4000s and 2001s. There's an active STH-10 at Melvin Price Memorial Park, about a mile away from where I live. In an area West of Illinois 15, there's a yellow Model 3/5/7 at a fire department.

Okay, so this is going to get to me.

I know the first siren you took a picture of in STL County is at Woods Mill and 141. I definitely feel like I should know where the second one is, but I can't quite place it. Can you tell me where it is?

Nice pics, btw!
