I caught todays test!

Wed Feb 09, 2011 6:59 am

Well, it wasnt easy. I raced from Lexington after getting out of class at 10:30 to Louisville. I wasnt sure I would make it. The nav said I would arrive 7 minutes late! But, I arrived at the eastern-most Thunderbolt in Louisville (save for the previously-recorded one at eastern high school) just seconds before it roared to life.

My last (and only) 2 recordings were done with my Droid, so they were kinda "ehhh" quality, but I got a new camcorder for Christmas, and man, this thing is legit. I shot it in 1080p and it even sounds awesome. The link is below, and if you want, check out my other 2 siren recordings from last year too - the test in August and October. Both are 1000T's, but like I said, not as good quality. In march, when I should have time to get the tripod set up, this will be great! I didnt have time to set up the tripod today. I looked down and my car said it was 12:01 and I thought "no way, if I stop to set up the tripod, I will miss it". And sure enough, right then, the Crosby Middle School siren came to life- and man, does it sound good!

I love it! Sounds healthy and has a great chopper level. Quick wind-down that one has. Hope they keep it up and running a good long time.

Thanks!
Viva la Thunderbolt!

I also got a recording from yesterday's test. I wasn't as satisfied as I would have liked to have been with my december recording of the now low tone PRP VFD #1 1000T, so I recorded it again from a better location. I tried only using the built-in mics on my Yamaha recorder just for the heck of it, and I widened the stereo mix a little in Audacity. It turned out pretty good for just using the built-in mics! This is all I have for this month unfortunately, so I'll try to do better next month.

it looks like somebody else also caught a short video of the test, but I don't know what part of town they were in.

Edit: I just realized that Windows Live changes the URL's for the download links to the files from time to time, making the direct links useless. You'll have to click on the following links, then click 'Download.' Sorry for the inconvenience.

You guys' video and recordings sounded great. Louisville's Thunderbolts sound pretty healthy!

Me too! Yup, all LOU t-bolts have that terribly short wind down. Everything is cut at once. That change came when they put all the new FS electronic do-dads on it. Josh (below) can answer better than I can lol.

Well, I went to BB in search of the Cannon HF-M30. I wanted one with a nice sensor, full 1080P recording, and an external mic input. ONLY cannons have this external mic input. They didnt have the HF-M30, so they gave me the HF-M31 for the same price! I got it for $450 out the door, but this was on sale. The M31 was around $900. Today I see it for ~500. It is incredible. Go for it.

Honestly, I am not impressed with Lexington's system of MOD's and some other new siren that I dont know what it is. I hate electronic sirens. But since I am here and all, I will this coming April. March they do a silent test!

Concerning the short wind-downs, it's because the time delays on the new controlers are all set way too short. The PRP VFD #1 TBolt has the longest wind-down I've heard so far on any Tbolt in our system. The time delay on that one is set to 2.5 seconds instead of 1.5. It used to be set on 1.5 like most of the others, but they apparently changed it when they swapped out the chopper transformer/controler back in the Spring of 2009 before they replaced the head. I knew that that one seemed to have a longer wind-down than the others, but I wasn't sure whether the cause was the time delay until I recorded it this past test.

About the unknown electronic siren in Lexington's system, could it be one of these?

If that one would have functioned, it would have sounded just like a Mod.
