This is a Civil defense film i found from 1951 on youtube. I think "Duck and Cover" Is just anoter way of putting your head between your legs, and kissing your butt goodbye. There is absolutley no way you'll sirvive a Nuclear/ Atomic attack by putting your hands behind your head and putting your head between your legs. But everything sould be alright if you do - as the government says.
I see that this film was a purpose made to scare the living out of kids at school, Like i said, Might as well kiss your butt goodbye, because it's probably the last time you'll see it!

Not sure why this is being posted, but as for your "Duck and Cover" theory...they probably had the kids duck and cover incase the building started to fall apart from the explosion. If I recall, I think only if you are close (Very close) the the explosion will you get immediate radiation poisoning...I think the rest falls in the form of Fallout.

From what i heard, Fallout could still get to you. In a 10 mile or less radius you'd be done. 10 miles might seem a log way, But that's where the technology of the Atom/ Nuclear bomb comes in. These days an atomic bomb the size of a small Television (19 inches) can blow away about 25 miles of area (Coverage of fallout). I have No idea as to if this theory is true, But it seems like as how long ago it was that it took a bomb the size of a propane tank to cover a 10 mile raduis with fallout. Like Forrest Gump says. Life is like a box of chocolates, You never know what you're going to get.

Actually, Fallout is extremely highly variable, depending on the technology used, the type of fissile material, and the weather. You can build a hydrogen bomb with almost no radioactive fallout (theoretically none but that's not possible with today's technology) And Duck and Cover isn't going to shield you from an atomic blast, rather it would help protect you from falling objects further away from the bomb.

The Fire Enigine at 1:50 isn't going to do much good at the fire without fire hose either.
