The Siren Board

Since no one here ever seems to get recordings of the good old sirens , especially SD10's here is one for you guys... Recorded tonight for a 18:00 test. A nice sounding SD10 and if you listen closely you will hear a Model 5 in the background on the wind down.. Also a model 7 at the end of the recording from the next town over...

Hmmm, I thought the sd 10 had a little bit faster windup, since the rotor is aluminum.maybe it's a electrical thing. just a thought......

Could be on 208V

yea its a slower wind up than some , it's just the way it's wired up to power. as far as I know it's a 10 HP motor

Yes it came out very good.. it was recorded from 1/4 mile away from the SD10. The problem with most recordings is they are recorded too close to the siren or horn.. If you can see the siren you are way too close, your recorder can't handle it and you don't achive a robust natural reverberating recording in full dynamics.. listen to how that SD10 kinda reverberates through the air, sounds full.

Indeed. It is just the right distance if your intent is to record the siren as it should be.

Too close, and you get all kinds of feedback/distortion that ruins the recording.

Too far off, and you risk sound-wave sleights-of-hearing i.e. waves bouncing off nearby structures or natural objects, or other sundry weather-related tricks.

I'm glad you caught the 7 HP at the end too. It reminds me of one of those aural tricks that (electro)mechanical sirens at varying distances can play: you hear so much less of the wind-up the farther away you are from it.

I can only describe it that way; but it's cool.

UVFR used to have a good SD-10 recording.
