STH10 has fallen

Tue Dec 19, 2006 1:04 am

Well according to the Federal Warning Systems website the STH10 is gone forever now. 1965-2006 I believe. It was a good siren. At least I got one while they were cheap. Just thought I'd post the news.

It was projected to be discontinued back in March or so. Now is the time when it really happens though. Thanks for bringing it up though, I needed to clear that.

Yes, Fed. Sig. might still make parts affiliated with the STH-10 in case a customer only need parts of their STH-10, so that they do not have to buy a new siren. I like such strategy.

STH-10 Has Fallen

Wed Dec 20, 2006 5:40 am

I really hate to hear this.

The STH-10 is my 2nd favorite siren(after Thunderbolt).

The city of Smyrna, GA, where I once lived, began installing a siren system about 30 years ago. Initial system was 4 STH-10s and an old Model 5 which once belonged to the city. The Model 5 never worked; it was replaced with an STH-10 several years later.

Smyrna expanded its system to include 11 STH-10s. They also added 3 Whelens and 2 Thunderbolts which were bought from DeKalb County, GA.

For a number of years the sirens were tested every Saturday at noon. I could hear the one at the old police station(siren now moved a couple blocks away after station relocated) inside my house with the windows closed.

I thought the STH-10 had a great startup sound; it certainly took a long time to wind down! Its sound would often carry well beyond the projected 1/2 mile..especially if the wind was blowing the right direction.

Twice each year I still get back to the area for extended visit. I noticed several years ago that the Smyrna sirens had been given a coat of fresh yellow paint. As far as I know, they're still in use for tornado warnings.

I routinely hear the STH-10 in Monitor, which is four miles away. Once, it woke me up! The pitch is a little too high for my taste, but it had a nice, slow rise and fall compared with the Model 5.

According to Dan Bierovic, the STH-10 dates back to around 1949-1950. The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan first ordered five STL-10 sirens in 1953, and added several more in 1958 after an F2 tornado went through the southeast side of town. Ironically, the STL-10s were replaced by 42 Whelen WS-2000-16s, in early 1979.

Sincerely,

Ron

In a conversation that I had with Greg Alcorn, at Federal Warning Systems, he said that finding replacement parts for the STH-10 is next to nil. I was really saddened to hear this news, but with the debut of the Eclipse series, the STH-10's days were numbered. I really loved this model very much.

If anyone needs an AR Timer, now would be the time to buy one. According to Greg, if they break, there are no replacement parts available to repair them. Moreover, he recommended the Federal Controller as the way to go for a new siren timer. With these changes and the Eclipse-NH being marketed heavily in favor of the Model 2, I wonder how much longer the latter will be on the market?
