Central Siren Location Map

So I've been working on a Google Maps enabled web site for a while to allow the mapping of siren locations and models. I was hoping to start collecting data from people here (the best place for OWS enthusiasts).

Site is http://www.thesirenmap.com. It doesn't have any sort of login just yet, so I have to add them somewhat manually, but it's definitely set up for viewing.

If you know the locations of any sirens in your areas, pinpoint the spot where it is on google maps. Send me the lat/lons, companies and models. You can leave it here in this thread, PM it, or preferably email it to me at [email protected] with the subject "Siren Locations" (without the quotes).

I promise to have the login/registration stuff done soon so people can add them themselves.

Edit: Once a siren is on the site, it can be directly linked to. Zoom in until you see the marker for the siren, click it, and in the lower-right where it tells you the model, there's a little green arrow. That's a link directly to the siren. I imagine the use case here being you're talking about a siren, and instead of a long google.com link, a short, siren-specific link could be used.

I'm also interested in any feedback anyone has.

I'm looking to really centralize the siren mapping stuff out there, to give us OWS people a large, visual database of where they are. So feel free to get hunting and send me any you find/know of.

Oh wow, that's really cool! Is there any way you can merge all the Google maps of siren locations that have already been plotted. I know for large projects like this, wiki-based entry systems are usually the way to go due to the sheer volume of entries. Links to pictures or other media is also helpful.

Those sirens you have for Norman are decommissioned. I have a ton of maps in pictures. I'll send you a PM if you like.

@dilloncarpenter I've never been to Norman. That was purely Google Maps/Streetview discoveries. I'm interested in any siren that's still in place. If it's operational, broken, etc, that's fine. I intend on incorporating history and status metadata at a point in the future. I am very interested in maps of siren locations, especially if they indicate what models are in use. PM away.

@JasonC I was killing myself to get activated on the forums so I could see if anybody would be interested! Thanks! I only really intended on doing geographic stuff for now, and if the demand was there, going forward from there. The Google maps that already exist might be exportable, and if so, I can probably drum up some nerdy chops to get them in.

I do intend to structure it "wiki"ish. People registered would be able to edit and add siren locations, manufacturers and models. New users would have a moderated period where someone who's been around would have to check their work, but other than that it would be open.

I'm open to any data related to the location of sirens as well as their status and model/mfg. And for now, any corrections/additions will have to go through me because I just haven't had a reason to put work into it yet. Users == a reason, and I'd hope that it could be a good companion to many a discussion here.

Wow, nice work! I'm admittantly geeked by this!

I agree it would be cool to integrate pictures of the sirens into this at some point. Would it be possible to link to a street view image of the siren (if available) when clicking on the green arrow? Forgive me if you're already doing this. It's possible it doesn't work correctly on my iPad.

I'll work on getting some of my maps updated and sent your way!

I've continued to add to the site with a little help from the forum and my own travels. I intend on implementing the ability for users to log in and add/edit sirens on their own and could use a few "alpha/beta" testers.

Send me an email at [email protected] if you're at all interested and when the time comes, I'll get you in and work with you.
