STH-10 hopefully getting painted

Wed Oct 12, 2011 1:11 am

Update:
Ok, so I think I may be painting this thing in the spring. I figured I could take the projectors off and paint them on the ground, but how much does this thing come apart? Id like to take it down for a better paint job, but that may be impossible. If I can get into manageable pieces, I would take it down that way. I did some reading on the manual, but it didnt show weights for the pieces. I may just have to go up there, but not much working room up there haha.

Old post:
Here are some pictures of my fire company's STH-10. It is starting to get rusty, so I was thinking that a new paint job is due. Is there any other maintenance that should be done to this? I don't think anything has been done to it since it was knocked off of its former tower over 15 years ago. Thats why it has those new horn, but should really have another new horn since one is still messed up. Does anyone still service these? Im going to guess not, I wouldn't mind doing some service on them. A little more info, our town used to have atleast four other sirens, all set off by switches installed in members houses starting in 1948. They were placed all over our fire district, which is only 5 square miles at the most. We have all of the records about these, which I would post up if there was interest. I also found a siren in my other department that hopefully I can get and work on. Thanks for the time!

If it's 3 phase all one would do is replace the bearings in the motor and than blast the rust off and repaint should be good for another 15-20 years

I have one and have taken other ones apart they are quite easy to do.

If it's single phase then there is more to do on it.

Which fire district is this from? I photograph fire trucks as a hobby and have been all over the fine Garden State taking pictures.

Hey there. I got your message on youtube...but figured I'd reply here since I see this also. Getting those projectors off up in the air will be a task. Chances are, the bolts will be tough little buggers and half of them will break. It'd be best to have the whole thing craned down to the ground, but if that is not an option, then hop on up and break those rusty projector bolts loose. Once the projectors are off, you can sand blast them (that would be best) and prime/paint them. As far as what's left up there, well, the next part to come off is the motor/stator/rotor and that combo is around 200 lbs and very awkward. Then the intake tube and roof mount is all that's left.

If you have a stable work platform up there, you could probably sand the motor and intake tube/roof mount, but the stator would be kind of tough. On mine, I just left the motor/rotor/stator all intact, cleaned them up, primed and painted them. If you clean it up really well and use a good rust stopping primer, then the finish will last a fair amount of time...the best practice though is to completely disassemble and sand blast each component, so there is no more rust. Rust will always show its ugly face again if you leave it there; just a matter of how long before it does.

Oh, and for my rotor, I just turned it to the point where you couldn't see it (it was hiding behind the stator) and I painted the siren like that. It does not need to be painted because it is cast aluminum and will not rust.

Hope this helps.

If you get the opportunity, do you know what color you're going to paint it?
