8/12 port ACA P-10 - Woodstock, IL

Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:39 am

Located in front of what appears to be a water works building in front of Bates Park on Route 47. By the looks of it and the fact that it has the 8/12 port ratio, I believe this guy started out as an Allertor, and for whatever reason someone (likely Fulton) replaced the old Allertor shell with a Penetrator-style projector and intake. Really has a mean, howling sound to it! Recorded by TransitWeather on YouTube during the monthly statewide Illinois siren test.

I bet you that is EXACTLY what happened. Proof.

The very first Allertors introduced had a significantly larger back cowl. Compare:

"Normal" Allertor:

Early 8/12 Allertor:

Now compare to Penetrators:

"Normal" P-10:

The P-10 in the video posted in this thread

Note that the P-10 posted by mr_thunderbolt1003 has that same enlarged back cowl as the early Allertor.

A "conversion" from an Allertor to a Penetrator series is the only plausible explanation. And that's possible since all a Penetrator is is an Allertor with a different housing. The motor/rotor/stator and rotator assemblies are virtually identical.

Regardless, an 8/12 [ACA] siren that isn't a P-50 is terrifically rare. And what a beauty this siren is.

It definitely has the old 10 HP Allertor motor in it...If it were a Penetrator motor, it would sound about 3/4 of a semitone higher. Great find!

Actually, they made quiet a few 15 horse allertors. They also made a ton of 10 horse penetrators. P-10's had that same pitch as an allertor also.

Same siren, just the allertor has that over the top projector.

The P-15 8/12 has the 8 port dominate they to me sound flat and the p-50 8/12 has the 12 port dominate. and it sound much different.

Any recordings of 8/12 P-15s or actual 8/12 P-10s? (unlike this one which we've established as being a redressed Allertor)

8/12 Allertors (like the two in Dane County) and this P-10 sound both to be about a semitone flatter than the P-50 and Cyclone.
A resident of arguably the most siren-diverse county in history.
