Sterling M5 16/16 restoration slide show

Fri Feb 24, 2012 2:53 am

Finally finished a documentary slide show of the Sterling M5 16/16 restoration I've been working on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhHD4t-k ... e=youtu.be

It's similar to the SD-10 I did last year, loaded with captioned photos and has a few test videos.

If you don't want to sit through the entire 9:57 here are a few highlights:

Is that your CAT? I'm downright jealous if it is. Makes my stuff look ghetto :o

The new end pieces look great

Not my CAT, it just happened to be on site when the siren needed to be unloaded.

Fantastic restoration job! Will this siren be used for fire calls and tornado warnings?

Wow it looks fantastic. Did you change out the sleeve bearings or just shim them back up?

Fire calls only. There is no system of outdoor mass notification in Montgomery County PA, except for the Limerick NGS which is used only for emergencies at the plant.

The bearing and shaft work was subcontracted out by the company that rewound the motor, so I wasn't directly involved with that part of the project.

They had a machine shop deposit new metal on the shaft so the rusty spots could be built up and then turned to the correct diameter. That same shop might have turned the bearings to match the shaft, but I don't think they were replaced.
