So, when I went to see the Mobil today, I found this interesting thing in another lot....and I think it *might* be a siren but I have no clue!

@Jared H:

That's what led me to take a photo of it in the first place; I thought I saw some other "potential" mystery sirens, or what looked like them as well. This place isn't but 10 minutes from my house....so I'll see if I can get a closer look sometime :)

That is a rotary intake screen for an irrigation system that pumps from a surface water source (lake, pond, river, etc). It clamps over the intake pipe, and has a small pressure line attached to the fitting near the top. Nozzles on the pressure line spray against a row of fins inside the "drum" causing it to rotate, whle other nozzles clean weeds, algae, etc. off the screen as it turns. They work really good where there is a lot of aquatic growth in the water source.
What on earth are you going to do with THAT?

Now that you say that, it really does resemble an intake screen for a centrifugal pump, especially with it laying among other large flanged steel pipe fittings and PVC pipe. Don't think this one's a Riverscreen (or any other self-cleaning screen) though, that little 3/4" barbed fitting just past the screen is probably for the primer pump intake so it too can be filtered.

I zoomed in on the photos above (ctrl++++++), and that is the type of rotary intake screen I was referring to. If you look closely in the first picture, the drive blades or "fins" as I called them, are visible on the bottom section of the screen. The centre axle pipe is visible, and the spray bar/drive pipe is also there inside. (behind the tall weeds to the right of centre) This is the short one, as the long ones have a two more ring sections below the drive blade section. There also appears to be a couple of "hook and loop" fittings in the pile below the screen: a lateral reducing tee with an end flange still attached to the branch, and the female end of an 8" pipe section.

These screens were built really light, and we had to fix a few of them at work because they end up like a flattened pop can if they got too restricted.
What on earth are you going to do with THAT?
