We had sirens here in San Jose until 1989, when FEMA cutoff matching maintenance funds.

But LA City & County did bail on sirens kind of early.

C. D. Sirens Long Beach

Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:23 pm

They had half of the Sirens still working in Long Beach ,Ca. up
until November 1990 , about 12 out of 25 or ?
Then in Jan 91 or whenever the first Gulf
War started the city stopped monthly test ..... " So as not to scare
anyone . " I think it was also a liberal conspiricy too.
That war was
won quick then they never turned them back on ,left to rust
and dismantle several they have.

Come to think of it, San Francisco has had a siren system for decades, and they are a lot more Liberal than Los Angeles. They did switch to ATIs a few years agom and they are still trying to get the bugs out of that system.

San Francisco siren system

Mon Jul 03, 2006 4:37 am

Hacksaw makes a good pont , since San Francisco has plenty of
Liberals . Therefore what is the true answer to the So Calif. CD siren
system-s in a state of decay & dismantle . Is it perhaps because
one person or more in the C. D. dept. city of S. F.
or other Local Government Cared
enough about the PUBLIC WARNING, or not totally narrow minded
on Earthquakes only . I say the above due to a L. A. times story
about three years ago when L. A. Emergency Mgt . stated" Now is
not the time to return to the old Cold War Sirens." I say.....to them
Well what else
have we got from midnight to 7AM !! IE : North Korea
And what about Tsunami threat ? that was a good enough
reason to keep all Sirens within one half mile of the Beach
working. Any one trust Noaa Weather to send out War & Attack Warnings?
did they due this for 911???

I really don't think that a city being liberal or conservative makes a difference when it comes to installing sirens. It all depends on where their priorities are set. Just my 2 cents.

Well, their total ignorance of preparedness for impending danger on their little "country" is a classic trait of a totally liberal government.
California has to realize soon that they can possibly get bombed by the Kim Jong, and a Tsunami can form (beacause they were stupid enough to settle on a fault) any minute after a earthquake.

Its what happens when you get old or neo-hippies involved in government. They are more concerned with "free love" and "animal rights" then keeping their people safe.

Ahh well, sometime it might be too late before they realize it...

I don't think it has to do with politics. Oakland has installed a system of several dozen 2001s, in part due to the fire storm of 1991, and a near miss at a plating plant around 1995. And their Mayor is former Gov. Jerry Brown.

Now, the Tsunami thing varies with where a city is. San Jose has no Tsunami threat, for instance, but Santa Cruz does. But neither have sirens. Now that San Jose has a new OES Director this might change.

And if Kim Jong Il sends balistic missiles this way, the US has plenty enough to vaporize Pyonyang.

Now, as far as being "stupid" enough to settle on a fault line: There are earthquake risk risks all over. Quakes have been felt in all 50 states, and the USGS warns that 38 states are at risk of earthquake damage.

Be prepared to move Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Reno, Memphis & Las Vegas since they are also on or near faults.

Should we move everyone 300 miles inland along the Gulf & Atlantic Coasts due to Hurricanes?

Also, here's the link to the City of Berkeley Office of Emergency Services web page:

http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/fire/oes.html

Berkeley is probably THE most Liberal City in California. Note that Terrorism is mentioned as part of the CERT training. If Liberals don't believe in being prepared, then why do they offer this?

Don't generalize people you don't know, Jerry!

One wonders who painted it. That wasn't an easy job.

I'd paint the pole plant green the reflector as petals and siren same as the center of a flower.

Englewood, Colorado's two Allertor's are on plant green poles which blend in nicely with the trees.

San Francisco's sirens have enough bugs in the system, but they are quite expert at dealing with buggery so they should be working in no time.

Robert -- what's the deal with flowers?
