Washington, D.C. Sirens?

Mon Jul 15, 2013 12:07 am

I'm taking a school trip to Washington, wondering if I'll see any sirens.

Well, they did once have a system of Foster Engineering sirens, but I think those were removed awile ago. I think they did have Thunderbolts as well, but I think those are gone too. I don't know if they have a current system, keep an eye out for any sirens.

I took a vacation in DC back in 2007, and I do not remember seeing any sirens at all. Also, if I did see one, I would've taken a picture of it.

Oxon Hill, MD, not far from W.D.C, has a Sterling M-10 at the FD. And Rockville, MD, about 30 minutes from D.C. has a STH-10 as well. I have seen the STH in person actually. Fort Washington/Friendly, MD has a 3T22 at the Allentown Road VFD. Hope this helps in any way.

Also, D.C. itself, is rumored to have Whelens somewhere, can't confirm that though.

When I was there in May 2011 all I saw were several MOD5020s and Whelen 2700s along the Potomac River south of the city. Pretty sure these belonged to Bolling AFB. Saw nothing at all in the city itself, however there is rumored to be more Whelens near the Capitol.

Arlington, VA has a system according to this article:

There's an OA-1 at the pentagon. There was a Thunderbolt on one of the corners of the Capital building, but it is long gone

Arlington, VA has a Hormann near the U.S. Air Force Memorial, here is a photo for anyone who wants to see something.

I've never heard of Foster Engineering. What sirens did they produce?

Foster Engineering was a New Jersey company who produced sirens which were powered by steam or air, I forgot which. They had an advertisement in the 1940s about Washington DC buying a system.
