Federal Signal 2001-SRN/DC Roundback Received

Sat Jul 27, 2013 4:39 pm

I received my newest addition to my collection Tuesday, a Federal Signal Corporation 2001-SRN/DC "roundback". Newest addition and collection, my God, those are two words I never thought i would be saying. The only siren I wanted was a Thunderbolt because of my memory of them when I was a child. Do to the enormous size of these sirens I never ever thought I would have more than one. Well I guess im infected with this siren collecting disease now and I have found ways to get more.

The siren is in good condition. There is no corrosion on the rotor and stator. There is minor surface rust in places on the upper rotating section. Federal apparently doesn't galvanize their steel sheet metal parts any more. That must be why they have such a rust problem on their newer sirens. The rotator box is perfect with no rust, but the upper cover box is starting to rust. There is no evidence of the upper box being galvanized.

Anyway, here are the pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58979889@N06/

I don't know the age. I was wondering if the M89 in the last three digits of the serial number may be the month and year.

At this rate you'll be starting a siren museum soon.

BTW, is that gearbox an Abart, it looks like it has Abart stamped on it like the tbolt boxes? I know they switched to an Emerson Raider on the squareback 2001's.

It is an Abart gear drive. I'm pretty sure it is identical to the one used in the Thunderbolt. With the exception for the DC motor and the larger size of the mounting base, the whole rotation mech. is identical to the thunderbolt. It even looks as though I could remove the cover over the collector ring housing and drop in the Thunderbolt chopper. It still retains the same four mounting tabs that the Thunderbolt used to mount the chopper on the chopper tube.

Very nice find! Congrats!

I think it's a 1989 unit judging by the tag.
Ripe old age of 26. I'm quite fond of alcohol and telephone relays.

Is the chopper motor in the back housing, or in the cone like newer 2001's?

It's in the cone. I don't think any were made with the motor in the back.
