Portage County Campgrounds Install Weather Warning Systems
JULY 28, 2013

For the City-Times

Thanks to a joint project funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, State of Wisconsin and Portage County, local campers will now be notified of severe weather.

In an effort to increase safety for park visitors the Portage County Parks Department has installed a tone/voice omnidirectional electronic storm warning system in the four county- owned and operated campgrounds.

Park officials say campers, picnickers, swimmers and nearby private residences will all benefit from this new warning system.

The warning system will produce an audible message activated by the Portage County Unified Dispatch Center in the event of severe weather, hazardous material spills and notification of lost or missing person(s) or child.

The activation will be initiated only after official information is received from the National Weather Service or other reliable source.

The warning devices are installed on the top of 55’ freestanding poles centrally located with each park. The warning systems are installed at Collins, Jordan, DuBay and Lake Emily Parks.

For more information contact the Portage County Parks Department at 715-346-1433.

Thanks so much for sharing this! My grandma owns a cottage on Lake Dubay about a mile from the County Park. I have always had the urge to install a model two or something similar at the cottage with remote activation due to the lack of coverage in the area. While not populated by many, the county park is usually always filled and there is a cranberry bog with many of the workers residing on site (where my grandmas cottage is). Now the county has it taken care of!
