Owning a Siren?

Wed Apr 23, 2014 10:38 pm

Hi I'm new here, and I would like to know if it is legal to operate a siren? Or how about owning one?

I live in the Chicago area.

#1 It's legal to operate a siren on test days or if you are in an area that is permitted for loud noise or if no one lives within one to two miles then it's legal. If it's a quiet siren that won't bug your neighbors then it's legal.

#2 You can own a siren it's not illegal.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey welcome I'm from the Chicago area too! In the city, it is probably illegal to operate a siren.

Question number 6 on the FAQ page on the main site has a good answer in my opinion.

The most simple way to do it... Call the police head and just ask "May I set my siren off with your system?" You may have to move it somewhere and run it off of a generator or some crud like that but honestly that's probably how you are going to be able to do it. I can only do a no blower growl of my thunderbolt without moving it to a city that has sirens... And even there doing it full blast can only be done for like 10 seconds (Because that's how long they test them.)

Please do not call the Chicago Police. They are not in charge of the Sirens. Just do yourself a favor and do not operate a siren within Chicago's City Limits.
I totally agree with this.
