Federal Signal Equinox 9-4-14

Fri Sep 05, 2014 4:26 am

The yearly siren test for Beaver Valley NGS yesterday went off without a hitch. Tommy McGowan and I rode down to the Beaver Valley area of PA, WV and OH to record some Equinoxes. They seem to have issues holding a steady pitch but its probably an effect of the wind blowing into the projector horn, much like the effect of the wind on a 2001-130. I'm glad the opportunity arose for a road trip with another enthusiast, It was indeed a fun trip. I have pictures that I'll upload tomorrow, but right now without any further ado, let me introduce my video.

This Equinox is located at the Mill Creek Hill Cemetery about 5.5 Miles SW of the Beaver Valley Plant. It sounds for 3 minutes in alert and went off right on schedule at 6:15. Enjoy!

That isn't a 2001-130? What? What is the difference?

How can you not tell it is not a 130?!? The equinox to my understanding started out as a special order siren for a town that likes the 2001 look but liked the low tone sound of an eclipse. Apperently it was in production for a very short time. Don't quote me on it however thought I am not 100% sure on it.

I find it very interesting how the pitch on this siren raises over time then gets steady towards the end. Like the WPS "Thunderbolts" from Wichita Falls, this is incredibly odd for me to see that siren and hear that sound.

Or those 2T22 ATI's or STL 10 ATI's... Crazy huh?

No, it's an Equinox. Look at the ports and compare them with this picture:

Very confusing to hear a 2001 looking siren make T-128 noises

Oh no I am sorry that the word "Dubbing" didn't come to mind when I posted that. Or the word "Sick." I have heard some stupidly sick 2001s before. They sounded a lot like that and I can tell you that it was not an equinox. They pretty much look identical and honestly my first thoughts were that it was a sick 2001 130.

You know, Equinoxes have logos on them that say "Federal Signal Equinox." Maybe someone could get a picture of the logo on this siren...

Actually, check TommyBNSF's post, watch his video. You can CLEARLY see the logo saying "Equinox."

I does say equinox and I believe Tommy may have snapped a quick pick of it as we were driving away after he dropped off one of his audio recorders.
