You can always create 220 from two negative 110V lines from opposite sides of the main power panel as well, assuming you do in fact have 220 service to your home. No, our house does not have a 240 volt hook-up in our laundry room. Our washer/dryer are running of gas. And our house is newer, so I would assume that the person who built this house wanted the appliances to be gas.
