It's probably not used. It's most likely an old forgotten air raid siren. Nice find!

It looks like they had some sort of cupola on the roof and mounted the head on it, then possibly mounted the blower and controls under it. It is an interesting set up. Nice find.

I'm almost certain this is an inactive CD siren as the only active large siren anywhere near there (that I'm aware of) is the Holyoke Super Sirex, and that's only run up for grins. Only active bolts in MA (and in New England for that matter) I can think of is a 1000(T) in North Adams, and 3 1003s in Grafton all used as fire sirens (found a good video posted in the audio/video section).
