This 1000 is located along Bridge Street in Paducah, not too far away from US 60. It is one of at least two confirmed 1000s in the city with the other one being located on Oak Hill Cemetery. Just like the last Thunderbolt I recorded in Paducah, this one sounded pretty awesome. I'll try to head back to record other Thunderbolts any first Saturday I'm free before they are slowly replaced.

Yeah, they do! I don't think Paducah activates them, but they do test them the same day. They're owned by the uranium enrichment plant nearby which I heard might be ceasing operations.

What's the point of those sirens next to each other?

You should go out there and record them before they possibly go out of service.

So I did a little research and it appears that the plant has already been decommissioned. Good chance the Whelens may no longer work. In fact, several buildings have already been demolished. They ceased operations back in 2013, but are performing a lengthy clean up process that'll take a few years. It wasn't exactly a nuclear power plant, but it did provide enriched uranium for military and nuclear weapons. It ran for a good 60 years but closed recently since the technology of the plant was severely antiquated by today's standards. It has a pretty interesting history and it explains why Paducah had a strong interest in CD sirens early on.
