Irving, TX Siren Hunt 8-1-15

Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:06 pm

Went out to Irving today and took some pictures of recent 508 installations I've noticed when driving through on other occasions. I also took some pictures of a few remaining EOWS 612s.

The first location I stopped at was Bird's Fort Trail Park which used to have a DSA at that location, however, to my surprise it was relocated to a nearby police station further North on Riverside Dr. I was also surprised to see the park still closed from previous rains which flooded the bordering Elm Fork Trinity River and subsequently flooded the park.

The next location I visited was the siren on La Villita West of Riverside Dr. There used to be a EOWS 612 at this location and I remember recording it about three or four years ago on an old tape camera. It sounded for about 10 seconds and then stopped while the rest of the system continued running for the duration of the three minute test. If I manage to find the tape and convert it to a digital file, I'll definitely throw it on here.

Anyways, here is a streetview of the old 612 (which managed to capture a repair tech carrying out maintenance on it.)

Here is the new 508.

The next location I stopped by is a 2001-130 on Longhorn Dr.

Went down the tollway a few more exits to an EOWS 612 on Carbon Rd.

This siren is up on a hill and has a good view of its surroundings, I'd imagine it gets great coverage as well.

Next I went to an EOWS 612 by Victoria Park off Northgate East of Pleasant Run Rd.

I also went to another EOWS 612 off Valley View Ln. South of HWY 183.

Lastly, I stopped by the recently installed 508 which is located between the Library and Fire/Police Training Academy off Esters Rd. South of Rochelle Rd. This siren also replaced an EOWS 612.

While I'm posting pictures I might as well include this picture of an EOWS 612 taken back in April, 2014. This siren is located on Walnut Hill and Branqus Dr.

Nice photos! I remember fondly going to Irving and seeing those EOWS'. There also used to be one a Texas Stadium that I'm sure got removed when the stadium was demolished. I always liked the installs on those concrete pillars to protect them from traffic impacts.

Actually, I was told by the EM director that it was relocated across the freeway.

Those are excellent looking installations. Nice job to whoever installed them. Very clean looking

Excellent photographs and thank you for sharing. I still need to get out to Irving sometime to see their wares.

What year did Irving's 612s go in? I know they were a later batch.

That 612 on Carbon road looks like it had UV boxes slapped onto it at some point. Definitely not an MCP like the others have.

Fascinatingly enough, if you look at the Street View for the siren in September 2007, you can see the pole with the UV boxes with the siren head missing. Wonder what the story on that unit is.

I'm curious what the function of the top white box is that seems to be on all the installations.

It wasn't on the La Villita installation until after November 2012 according to googlemaps streetview.

Nor was it on the Carbon Rd. installation until after November 2011 according to streetview

It seems to be a recent addition to all the sirens in the system.

My best guess is a custom radio set-up.

Maybe they are 800MHz RTUs of some sort. Our sirens in Columbus originally were run of the mill Whelen installations but the county and McCord added Motorola 800MHz RTUs and FPU'ed some of the earlier ones with ESC-864D panels to the almost uniformed 435Hz 2020 system we have now. Before Cobb County, GA replaced their Thunderbolts they had them as well. Granted they are still standing the last of their 2001s have them hooked up to the FCs. Houston County, GA also has Whelens with a similar setup.

I wonder if they still set the 612s off in chimes? Maybe I will go get a video of one next Wednesday...
